Atlantic mackerel and butterfish are managed jointly with squid under the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council's Mackerel, Squid and Butterfish Fishery Management Plan.
Mackerel is a migratory pelagic: some is sold fresh in domestic markets, most is frozen and exported, and it is also used as bait. Butterfish supports a smaller fishery, generally exported to Japan.
